Skincare PSA: if you’re trying to fade dark spots with no SPF… you’re jogging in place, boo.

I’m talking to my melanin-rich girls, guys, and theys who are serious about hyperpigmentation but still “don’t like sunscreen.” Let’s fix that today.

Why Dark Spots Love Melanin So Much

On melanated skin, dark spots are basically your skin’s overreaction to drama – breakouts, picking, ingrowns, inflammation, sun.

Your pigment cells (melanocytes) are protective and dramatic. When they get triggered, they send more melanin to the area, and that leaves you with:

  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)

  • Acne marks that linger long after the bump is gone

  • Uneven tone and “shadowy” areas

If you don’t protect that area from UV, the spot stays darker longer and your “brightening” routine is wasting time and money.

Why SPF Is Non-Negotiable on Brown Skin

No matter how deep your complexion is, UV light:

  • Deepens existing dark spots

  • Slows down every ingredient trying to correct them

  • Breaks down collagen and speeds up fine lines

Being Black or brown does not make you immune; it just means you burn and age differently. I need you to stop treating SPF like an optional extra and start treating it like step four of every morning routine.

What Kind of SPF Should You Use?

For melanin-rich skin, I look for:

  • Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher

  • Lightweight, non-chalky formulas

  • No heavy fragrances or pore-clogging junk

If you’re acne-prone, oily, or have sensitive skin, that’s fine – you just need the right texture and formula, not zero SPF.

How to Actually Use It Correctly

Quick rules:

  • Apply every single morning, even if you “work from home”

  • Use about two fingers’ worth for your face and neck

  • Reapply if you’re out in the sun for hours

Your brightening serum can’t outwork the sun.

When to Call Me In

If your dark spots:

  • Have been around 6+ months

  • Came from old breakouts, burns, or ingrowns

  • Look worse in certain lighting

…you probably need more than just SPF – you need a corrective plan.
